Where is the wife now? In Canada? Make J1 visa interview appointment now. (I believe you can get it 90 days before the program begins). I assume the cruise is Canada-AK-Canada, so you can stay in Canada to get the J1 visa (during your 6-months Canada visitor stay) and enter US using J1 visa after the cruise.
