There are two types of L1. L1-A (manager) and L1-B (Technical Specialist). Both are for personnel transfer within multinational companies. Basically one have to be working for the same company (or subsidiary, sister company) for at least two years (as I remeber) in the last three years. You must have the approval from US (there should be approval notice attached to job offer). Big companies normally have blank forms (they got quota per year) and can be very easy to get visa.

I am holding L-1 working in US.
