Question about B-2 Visa Extension for Parent

Hello All!

I have a very important question on B2 visa extension. The facts are:
1) Mom's B2 visa is valid from Nov'08 to Oct'09.
2) Mom's Chinese Passport expires in Oct'09.
3) Mom came to U.S. on 12/15/08, immigration officer gave her 4 months of stay. I-94 stamp says she needs to leave on 04/10/09.
4) Mom was given 4 months of stay because immigration officer said that she has to have 6 months left in her passport validity. Since her passport expires on 10/11/09, she was only given until 04/10/09 for her stay.

My question is:
1) Can my mom apply for the B2 visa extension while she is in the U.S. using this original passport which expires on 10/11/09?
My only concern is that U.S. CIS office will not permit travelers to stay in the country unless their passports will remain valid for at least 6 months after their departure.

Has anyboby encountered similar issue? Any suggestions is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
