what's wrong with getting divorced?

It is the last thing a U.S employer cares. You can be gay or bi or anything, it is none of the employer's business.
Regarding tax, it depends on what you will say yourself. Otherwise who will know you get divorced, but you have to do it at your own risk.
I would suggest you follow the system, rather than trying to beat it.
