Advise Needed on Recieving Frederal Govt. Payment

Hi, I will serve as NSF panel reviewer next month. NSF will provide $1240 for two days of reviewing to reviewer. But my i-485 has beed pending for more than 3 years. Can I accept the payment? I am a professor at a college (H1, not EAD). I heard that as long as the illegal work is less than 180 days, then, it is OK. Please advise.
