My guess is that both your boss and HR boss hated that you got lot of info from A. In another words, you worked passing or behind the boss, which is big no-no. They tried to teach you a lesson -- who is the THE boss.

This is especially true for those boss who worked their way up from the very bottom. Control freak or power freak.
