H1 layoff, EAD or H4

My wife was on H1, but was laid off recently. she has EAD from me.
should she just use EAD or get a H4?
I heard that getting a H4 has such benefit: if she finds a job, she can transfer to H1 again. that way, even my 485 doesn't go through, she is still ok.
If she uses EAD and my 485 fails, she will be out of status right away, no chance to go back to H1, am I right? thanks.
