Such traumatic procedure will only be applied when there is life-threatening condition in pregnant women that requires radiology exam.

专门的东西挡住肚子 is used whenever there is child-bearing age men and women needs X-ray, so the sperms/eggs won't be damaged. It's a routine. If known pregnant, should not get X-ray exam AT ALL!!
