Strictly speaking, you can work with new receipt until the date you receive H1b approval notice. beteween the date you receive H1b approval and H1b starting date, your portability will be lost. That's the only risk of unauthorized work that gap. However, There's no clear CIS rule on this, only the interpretation of AC21 law.
