J1能volunteer等waiver吗

I am a J1 postdoc, and my health condition doesn't allow me to work full-time. Is it possible for me to transfer to my friend's lab (he agrees) without pay and just apply for the waiver? Then I can change my status to part-time H1 or F2. Thanks a lot!
