关于留美读书签证问题

请问到美国读研究生是否只能申请F-1签证，而不能申请 J-1呢。 我的情况是想给爱人办陪读，然后她过去读书。这样我申请F-1签证不会影响她上学吧(因为学校的表格上写着我可以申请两个中的任何一种，但 F-2身份不能工作，只能上关于娱乐休闲方面的courses)。 另外填写她想过去读书签证官不会认为我有移民倾向吧。
