485 submitted last June, stuck at name check, help!!!

Hi,
I wonder whether this is typical. My 485 submitted last June. The current processing date is last Dec. I called USCIS and they replied a letter saying FBI is doing name check. My questions are,
1. Is it typical?
2. anyway to expedit this? I heard writing to senator or FBI, but wonder how to do it and whether it is useful?
