As long as you don't use 485 based EAD to work, you are still have valid F-1 status. When you apply H-1B on 04/01 next year, you are still F-1 student.
It is possible, that if USCIS approves your H-1B case and send you a new H-1B I-94 starting from 10/01/08, you are transferred to H-1B status. You don't need to go abroad to get H-1B visa in this case.
You may need to enroll into some summer classes to keep F-1 status from May to October in 2008.
Or if you have to work, you may use your 485 based EAD. After 10/01/08, you may go abroad to get H-1B visa and come back in.
Any way, better be quick next year because of the H-1B cap. If you have US master's degree, you have a little more breathing room.
