here is my suggestion:

1. require his company toextend his stay until 6 monthes after I-485 pending (he can use vacation, unpaid, whatever he can, just extend the stay, keep H1 until 6 monthes)
2. try best to get a job. However, to keep this I-485 alive, he have to move to the new company after 180days I-485 pending. If he move early, he has to trasnfer H1, and do green card again.
3. iF YOU HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED i-485 WITH HIM, I do not think you can do much except gettiing a joband file H1.

I know there is a lot of pressure. I jsut suffered similair situation recently. Good luck and I hope you family will be fine.
