Here is my lawyer's opinion (Fragomen):

1) a valid passport and an advance parole document; or 2) a valid passport, a valid H visa AND the original receipt notice from the adjustment of status.

I believe pjiang had a post on this issue.

But what else could you do except keep your finger crossed and hope for the best?

I would talk to a lawyer to see if there is anything could be done as you did have an extraordinary reason.
