I have never heard of anybody renewed their H1B from overseas. So I know very little of it. You don't have time fiddling around now since it'll expire early next year. First of all, contact your attorney and ask about the renewal process, if you intend to.

If you already have AP, or will have AP by the time you go home, I think you can use your AP to come back regardless - then your H1B status is no longer valid

Either way, you need to get your attorney to lay down all the options for you.
