What next if GC is denied

I have to use EAD to start a postdoc. My 140 and 485 cases have been pending for a long time. I was told that if I use EAD and the GC application is denied, I have no 2nd chance and have to leave the country immediately. Is that true? Is there anything, like appeal, I can do if that happens? Appreciate your kind help.
