XiaoBaiTu or 大侠: allow volunteering without EAD?

XiaoBaiTu or 大侠:

I submitted I-485 in July and it is pending now. My current work visa will expire before I get EAD.

Question?
Is it allowed or violative to continue to work without pay in the period of without work permit?
