Advice for greenCard beginner?

I got H1B and want to apply for LC as the first step for Green Card. I have Ph.D degree working in a financial firm. What materials should I prepare? How long will it take to get approval? Need I to ask for a laywer to do it? I have no idea. ANy advice or suggestions? Thanks alot.
