of couse you can do it yourself, but you are not as professional as attorney, if you omit some important supproting documentation, its possible INS will deny your case or request for evidence, which means you have to wait longer or have more trouble. My advice is if you could find a lawyer who charge reasonably, you'd better retain your own attorney. The resonable fee for I-485 is $1,000 or below, not more than that.
