Help! Can I file 485 while 140 pending (NIW)?

I filed I-140 (NIW) with receipt date on Dec. 20, 2006. It is still pending. I called my lawyer and was told I could not file I-485 until approval of 140. I highly doubt it according to what I learned from immigration forums, but not 100% sure. Somebody please teach me what I should do.
