opt start date change

F1 status. will graduate in June. I've already applied for OPT (for the perion July 1, 2004 to July 1,2005)and got the receipt. I'm afraid I can't get H1B visa this year and wonder is it possible to change OPT start date to August 10, 2004 so as to avoid the gap problem next year. Has anyone done so before? I talked to international office today. They said they could try for me but I had to take any unfavorable results. There is no gurantee.
