Is it legal to stay in US?

I lost my job yesterday so that my H1b status is invalid immediately. Someone told me that I'm still legal to stay in US because I've filed I485 together with my hu*****and based on derivative status. Is it correct? I also want to know whether I can apply for university with AOS. Thanks a bunch!
