H-1B question

I am in OPT right now, and my EAC will end in Aug/14/04. I just got an offer last week and I did not tell the employer my situation. I know it is better to apply H-1B asap. But I want to first impress the employer to get good chance of approval of sponsorship. That means I will ask the employer to sponsor my H-1B around June, 2004. If I apply around June, when can I expect to get the approval from USCIS? Can I still get the H-1B with beginning date 10/1/04 (or much late) so that it will minimize the gap? If the company want to keep me, how can they handle this case?
