H4 expiration

Thank you very much in advance! Now I am in a very very awkard situation. I filed I539 application changing F1->H4 last December. The new H4 will be expired on 6/15/2004. But I checked the processing time, it is still on September. I want to know if I can't get it before 6/15/2004, what I should do? My spouse has changed to permanent position and applied for H1 extension. Can I write a letter to INS to abandon the first H4 and apply for H4 again, or should I wait for the H4 approved, then apply for extension. Any advice are highly appreciated!
