Son's US passport expires 9/17, can he travel to China and back

My son's US passport expires on 9/17,we'll travel to China and come back at the end of August,does he need a new passport? I was told by Passport Agency that passport can not be renewd for junior. Anyone knows what the passport requirement for travel between these two countries? Any experience and advice?
