My cousin had this problem a long time ago. It is really illegal. But her lawer told her to find some politician (sorry, I really do not know what kind of title he has). Somehow, her Ph.D boss find her one, and that politician called the local INS and the things are smoothed away. I hope you do not panic, and think about this way.
