I got one promotion after filed 140 and one promotion after 485. Both happened in the same department. Then I moved to a different school using EAD. I talked to them on the phone and they did not seem to mind whether I stayed with the same Employer. Therefore, I am would recommend you to use your EAD for a better position when there is a chance.
