First it is very rare that BCIS will approve your application without interview, especially for marriage-based application. Second, you might be able to go through the interview without showing your passport, but if you travel out of America and want to come back, they will surely check your passport together with green card. Third, how can you go back to China if you don't have a valid passport?
It is very difficult as I see it.
