As long as he got I-140 approved and his I-485 is pending, he will be fine even if his H1 exceeds 6 years.

However, if he needs labor certification first, this step would take longer up to two years. Or he can try others like Eb1-OR, EB1-EA, NIW, depending on his qualifications.
