My NIW application pending, 法居

Thanks, all of you, nice friends.
I applied for GC based on NIW, but I don't know if it is related to employment or not. If not, that means I can wait wiht my EAD until my application is approved??? I really don't need to change to F2??? I talked with the person in the international office of my university and she told me my H1 will be invalid after I loose job and I only can become F2 holder if I want to stay in US legally. Is it correct?
