Correct. H1-B is a work visa. Once you file I-485 and EAD, you are adjusting your status (that is what I-485 is all about). You are adjusting from H status to "permanent resident" status. Before this adjustment process is complete, EAD is the only way to allow you to work legally. In other words, EAD means the end of "H" status.
