B2 延期

Hello,
My parents had mutiple entry B-2 visa, I wish they could stay longer than six month which have been stamped on their I-94. Is there another way except to apply extension from INS.
Somebody told me to take my patents for a short trip to Mexico before the expiration date on I-94, then they will get a new I-94 with a new expiration date when they come back from Mexico re-entry to US.
Is there anybody go through this successfully?
