You can have 6 years of H1 B status.
If under 6 years when your current H1B ends, you can file extension now to use up the 6 years. If already 6 years, you need to have other evidence (like LC pending) in order to get beyond 6 years. Stay with the same job or transfer or not, all subject to 6-year total.
