U could file I824 concurrently with ur 485. 824 would be based on an approved petition (140) at the natioal visa center. After ur 485 approved. Just inform the visa center ur status. NSC then send the visa package to China for processing. Your step-son would be informed the time of the interview.
saw cases being done this way.

U could also file 824 after 485 is approved like TuZi suggested. Either way would be applicable.
