H1toH4 question

I am going back to school and need to switch my H1 visa to H4 visa. How can I do it? Can I do it myself or need to hire a lawyer. Also my current H1 visa will expire on September 30 and I am sure I can't get H4 visa by then if I file it now. Can I still attend school just with H4 application receipt? Or am I considered out of status after september 30?
