Xiaobaitu, question about I-485 and OPT

Xiaobaitu,

Currently my I-140 was approved and our I-485s are pending. My wife is a student and will graduate soon. She wants to apply for OPT in case something goes wrong with our I-485s (I know it would be a rare case if something like this happen). However, a lady from the international student office of her school told her if she applies for OPT, it would mean that she gives up her I-485 petition. Is this true? Also she plans to use her AP to go home. Would this invalidate her OPT assuming she can still apply for OPT without affecting her I-485 petition? Thank you very much.
