A question about green card. Thanks.

Is it true that I can apply for green card before H1B? I already accepted an job offer in an university, starting in August. Currently I'm on OPT and will apply for H1B in July. Somebody told me that I can apply for green card directly and there is no need to wait for H1B.

Can somebody share some experience with me? Thanks a lot.
