re-taking FP

A question about taking finger prints.

I heard that a finger printing would be expired after one year of submitting I-485 application (probably the same for other type when finger printing is applied) and the petitioner needs to take a new one. My question is: will CIS inform the petitioner to do it, or the petitioner needs to ask for it on his/her own right?
