H1 Transfer Question: Do I need to start right away?

Tomorrow is my last day with the old company, and I have received my H1-B transfer receipt. Must I start with the new company next Monday, or can I take some time off (a week), and then start? Does the gap in between matter for future green card application? Thanks!!
