definition of out of status

Hi, I read a few postings below and start getting confused about the definition about out of status. I have one question for wojian and other experts. I filed change of status from H1b to F2 (before the expiration date of H1b) and is now F2 pending. I know it is legal for me to stay to wait for the results. During this pending period, what status do I have? Am I out of status? If the waiting time is more than 180 days, the 3 year no-entering bar will apply to me?
