You need apply for your parents as early as possible even though the form mentions before 45 days, I did for my parents in middle of March, and it is still processing now even though the expiration date is middle of May for them.

You have to mail original !-94 because they will stamp new date on it after approval, use certified mail or UPS, FedEX, tracking service to make sure you can track.

You will get receipt notice in 10-15 days first, that means it is filed and pending, they can stay until result comes no matter of expiration date passed or not. if they are rejected, they have to leave USA immeidately. Keep all copied including I-94 in case.
