Help: Can I still legally work at Company A after my O1 visa app

I am now working at Company A with H1B which will be valid untill end of 2006. Company B applied O1 visa for me and got approved and the O1 visa is vaild from 04/24/06 to 04/23/06.

Currently I am still working at Company A. The HR just told me that I worked illegally at Comapny A from 04/24. If it is true, I will be in big trouble.

Anyone had this case before?
