If your departure date is later than your AP approval date, you can't use approved AP at the port of entry. But you still can use AP for your next trip if your AP is for multi-entry.

You still can apply for H1 visa and use h1 to come back even if you don't have an approved AP. Applying for a H1 visa overseas while 485 is pending doesn't abandon your pending 485. This is very clearly stated in the filing structions of I-485 form.
