HOw to talk to manager about getting green card?

Greetings,
How shall I talk to my manager about asking for sponsorship of Perm? I have my daughter in China and it is not convenient to visit or get her back to US. Can this be a good excuse? But my manager seems not have any kids.(He is too old to have any.)
PLease give me some suggestions. Thanks a lot!
