I think that you need to receive your AP before you leave. It is dangerous for you to leave US without AP. INS might regard you as abanding your I-485. Don't take risk.
At your situation, you can still try to get AP before you leave. There are several ways to do that:
1. Check with your local INS. But you need to provide some evidence for family emergency, i.e. Dr's note. DON"T walk in with reason as you want to see your parents after 2-3 years of seperation. YOu need some evidence for EMERGENCY. I tried that but unfortuantely my local office doesn't deal with AP from employment-based I-485. So you have to check with them first.

2. Call INS and get a fax number to fax your materials for emergeny handling. I never done that but someone here said that worked for him. So you can try.

3. Write to INS. It might be more effective than calling. The person who answer the phone have no real idea about your case.

Anyway, it is to the best of your interest not to leave without AP. I don't know about your situation. But if I were you, I will get AP first before go home. You have gone through so much to where you are now and you might not want to jeopardize that in any way.
