Find a non-profit position for H1 transfer as soon as possible. After you submit the application and get the receipt, you can work. If you want to find a profit position, you have to apply for an H1 visa number again and then resume to work on Oct 1. In the between your status is illegal. I think, there is no official grace period for expired H1 status. You can at most stay for several days.
