Helps on E-2 visa

I am currently holding TD visa which is for the spouse of TN visa holder. I'm now planning to invest a business in U.S. So do I need to apply for E-2 visa before registering the company? Am I allowed to open a business here as Canadian citizen? I will be very appreicate if someone can share the knowlege of E-2 Visa. Thanks in advance!
