What you want to do is fine. Here is my personal thought. You should ask your boss to see whether your boss can extend your H1B for 2 or 3 months. You should also apply for as many post-Doc. positions as you can. Two months are enough to find another position since you are in this Country. I do not know what is your major. But I know in March, lots of grants will be approved so Professors should have money. You should try your best. You can send your application E-mail to many professors. I had one friend. He only had three months to find another post-Doc.. He got one and transfered his H1B quickly. He went to his new post-Doc. before his new H1B was approveed. He did not have any problems. Take care.
