Help?! "H1B starts after OPT expires"

My OPT epxires Sep.14 2006. The H1B will start at Oct.1.
Could I still stay at America? Could I work between Sep. 15-20?
If I cannot work, will the company fire me or jus tlet me take two week break without payment? What will the company do normally, keep my position without payment, fire me then hire me again?
